Here at Kingsholm C of E Primary School and Nursery Governors are an important part of `Our Kingsholm Family' and all our work is guided by the school's vision Everyone matters. 

All schools must, by law, have a Governing Board to provide oversight and accountability of the school's life. To do this we work together - our decisions are joint ones, no individual governors make decisions on their own.  This is called ‘collective responsibility’.  

The Governing Board holds the main responsibility for the financial management of the school, and we work with the senior management team to make major decisions, including how the school is staffed and difficult decisions, such as how to balance resources.  The governors are also responsible for appointing the Headteacher and the Deputy Headteacher. 

So, we have a key strategic role. We look at the ‘whole school picture’. We focus on setting the aims and objectives of the school and set policies and targets to achieve these.  

We do this by:

• Committing to attend meetings across the school year (we have full governing body meetings and committee meetings throughout the school year. We also sometimes have working groups of smaller numbers of governors.)  Regular attendance at meetings is a legal requirement of all governors.
• Taking collective responsibility for our decisions and the school.
• Supporting and also challenging the school in a constructive and mutually supportive way.
• Setting and regularly reviewing all school policies, always keeping in mind our school's core belief and values.
• Working with the school to ensure that the school’s operational plan is followed, and we set targets to achieve this.
• Visiting school regularly, conducting monitoring visits throughout the year to evaluate the school's progress to achieve the operational plan and we attend school events.
• Reading a lot - both school documents and extra reading to ensure we are aware of wider educational issues.
• Undertaking regular training to help us gain a better understanding of our role and to help the school progress.

 

Why we do it:

Being a governor is a voluntary role and we know it needs a considerable amount of time and commitment. We are keen to find ways to help parents join us, by looking at different ways to help you fit the role into your busy work and home lives. We want our governing body to reflect the whole of our community.

The government also recognises that governors have an important role to play in school life and ‘by law, employers must give employees who serve on maintained school boards ‘reasonable time off’ to carry out their duties.’ Please see below to find out more details about this.

We currently have several Governors who work full time, are parents and successfully carry out their Governor duties. As we all work together as a team, we make sure that tasks are shared out, so that no-one should feel that the role is too much. New governors are also supported by other members of the Governing Body. 

However, our main reason for being governors is that we want to ensure that ‘life in all its fullness’ is achievable for all our children – we want our pupils to see and reach their full potential. 

It is a very rewarding role – you get to play a part in helping make Kingsholm a fantastic school and be part of the many exciting projects that happen here. Some of our recent work has been in seeing the extension of the school, regaining the nursery, overseeing the OPAL scheme, and appointing our new Headteacher and Deputy Headteachers. All of these projects will have long-lasting positive effects on the lives of the children who come to Kingsholm.
